In light of recent School Committee election rhetoric intentionally creating a false dichotomy, I think it is incredibly important to make the following clear: Striving to create safe, equitable, and inclusive schools that honor the identities of everyone in our school community IS NOT at odds with academic rigor. The two can and should coexist.

Embedding representative materials and lessons into all subject areas makes discourse richer and expands learning and critical thinking, including for our youngest students. Research has repeatedly shown that when all students feel safe enough to fully show up in educational spaces, academic risk-taking increases, which leads to higher achievement.

If our classrooms don’t feel like safe spaces with high expectations for everyone, how can we have an environment that encourages each student to strive for more? That promotes learning through challenges?

Without safe, equitable, and inclusive school environments, we reduce the learning potential of everyone. Beyond that, we risk losing students, and none of us should accept that.

As the Chair of the School Committee, facilitating Community Speak is one of my responsibilities. In the interest of clarification, I wanted to share the following about Tuesday’s meeting: On our sign up form, community members were able to share their statement or viewpoint, but it was not required. Most community members did, but some did not. At my final check after the meeting, we had over 75 sign ups. Ten people signed up and indicated opposition to Serious Talks, and eight of the ten got the chance to speak. The two that did not signed up after I downloaded the list on Tuesday. Out of the supporters who signed up, many of whom signed up days before the meeting, 24 did not get the chance to speak. Community speak is only one way of sharing thoughts with the School Committee. As always, if you have questions or wish to speak further, you can reach me at scuthbertson@lexingtonma.org. To share your thoughts with the entire School Committee, email LPS School Committee school-com@lexingtonma.org. ...
